BACKGROUND: MORT SHIRAZI is originally from Madras, India. He was born into a family that had an ancestral connection to the thoroughbred horse going back a 100 years. Mort was introduced to horse racing at an early age by his late father, a Mechanical Engineer by trade and an astute handicapper, who created numerous mathematical handicapping models to fit horse racing.
About a hundred years ago, Mort's great, great grand uncle was one of the best thoroughbred trainers in India and had close to a hundred race horses in training. Mort’s late grand uncle the Prince of Bhopal was an avid polo player .
At the present time, only a few members of his family have a lingering connection with the horse. Mort’s cousins, one of who is the most well known Equine Veterinarian in India, and his other cousin who manages one of India’s largest stud farms are the only other horseman in the family. However, the family future along the horsemanship trail is looking very bright with Mort’s twelve year old nephew taking an interest in racing and riding; and Mort’s daughter doting on horses every day and wanting to spend every Saturday at the Kentucky Horse Park.

HORMANSHIP GOALS & QUOTES:
To be the best horseman I can be by keeping an open mind and always trying to increase my knowledge by surrounding myself with people that have more knowledge than me. And to realize that there is a serious shortage of good horseman in the thoroughbred industry.
Never underestimating or overestimating what I know.
“If a horse decides to leave put PRESSURE on so that they leave you NOW.”MORT SHIRAZI
“Horses MUST be allowed and tempted to do the wrong thing in pressure situations , so when they are rewarded with the release of pressure on accomplishing the correct thing. It means something” MORT SHIRAZI
“The release of pressure must be given when the correct action is no more than a thought in the mind of the horse and the action is a mere shifting of ounces of its weight” TOM DORRANCE
“Horsemanship is never truly mastered, frequently misunderstood and poor horsemanship is often used to blame the horse” MORT SHIRAZI
“Remember to always observes, remember and compare” DENNIS REIS
“If it’s predictable it’s preventable” DENNIS REIS
“Good better best, never let it rest, make your good better and your better best” PAT PARELLI
“Stay on this side of trouble” RAY HUNT
“Prepare to a position for a transition” RAY HUNT |
