SOME BASIC QUESTIONS ABOUT ME AND THE SERVICE THAT I PROVIDE
WHO AM I? MORT SHIRAZI was born into a family that had an ancestral connection to the thoroughbred horse going back a 100 years.
WHERE ARE YOU LICENSED? In am licensed to train in KY, OH, WV, PA and will soon be licensed in IN & IL.
WHAT SERVICES DO YOU OFFER? 1. BUYING & SELLING HORSES (Mares, Foals, Weanlings, Yearlings, Stallions & Racing Prospects).
2. STARTING YOUNG HORSES & GETTING THEM TO THE RACES: This is a THREE step process. 1. I will send your horse away to get started with the initial process of introducing the horse to a rider etc. This process can take as little or long as you want. 2. After the initial process is completed I will send your horse to a different training center location where he will start galloping and going in sets etc. He will remain there until he has breezed and easy 3/16 three times. 3. As soon as I get your horse I will focus on getting them to the races as quickly as possible keeping the horse’s soundness and pedigree in mind. Furthermore, I will do my part to leave no stone unturned in their training and in assessing their ability.
3. RACETRACK TRAINING: I have a few different programs listed below. In ALL of these programs I will hire & employ the rider, Vet, farrier etc and setup the training program. NO MATTER WHAT PROGRAM YOU CHOOSE THE GOAL IS WINNING RACES AT A HIGH PERCENTAGE. 1. STANDARD RATE PROGRAM: In this program you will charge a fixed day rate and a 10% Commission on First—Fourth. Additionally, you will be billed by other vendor’s who work or provide a service to your horse. 2. NAME YOUR PRICE & SERVICE: I will charge a MINIMUM rate and a 33% commission on FIRST—FOURTH. In this program you will be allowed to name and pick the services you want me to provide and the service or items you will provide. That will determine your total day rate price beyond the minimum price. This program will suit most small farms and breeders that possess some of the goods & services that are used in daily care of the horse. This will keep your monthly CASH expenses down. There will be additional charges from the vet, farrier, or any other third party that performs a service for that horse. 3. RACING SUBSIDY: The SUBSIDY program is designed for people that want to know that their monthly charges will be limited to one fixed charge every month that covers major of the expenses. 4. LEGGING UP HORSES FOR OTHER TRAINERS: I have no problem getting a horse ready to send off to another trainer. You tell me what you would like for me to do and I will follow your instructions to the letter.
4. YEARLING & WEANLING PREP: Call for rates. Your Yearling or Weanling will get the best of care and good kind handling to prepare them for the biggest stage of their young lives.
5. REHAB & LAY UP CARE: Your horse will be treated with the best of care and your written instructions will be followed to the letter.
6. PROBLEM BROODMARE CONCEPTION: Do you have a problem mare that has difficulty getting in foal. Send me your DRY (no foal by side) mare and I will help by working with the best reproductive specialist in the area.
WHAT IS MY BACKGROUND? I have worked nearly all aspects of the thoroughbred business. I started getting serious about my career in the thoroughbred business at age 16, when I joined the Madras Race Club & Riding School. Since then I have ridden in races, had a high percentage finishing in the money, been bucked off more time than I can remember, broken ribs, mucked stalls, been kicked, been run away with, had horses flip on me while I was on them, knocked unconscious while racing, suffered three concussions, trampled, kicked in the head, kicked in the face, kicked in the jaw, lost & gained the use of my leg, traveled with horses by float, foaled mares, ruptured disks in my back, prepped yearlings, mares & weanlings, started babies, purchased & sold cheap and expensive horses, purchased & sold stake horses, purchased & sold expensive seasons and shares, looked at thousand’s of racing prospects, seen a KY Derby Winner & KY Oaks Runner Up and a Breeder’s Cup runner slip through my hand, glad I bought or sold certain horses, regretted buying, selling or keeping certain horses, worked on lot of sore and lame horses, paid vet, feed, training, farrier bills etc. helped several horses survive numerous ailments, know the cost of losing a good horse, helped breed stake horses, been abused by employers, trained several employees to become proficient with horses, know the cost of a good employee, designed farms for ease of use and efficiency, founder of several programs to reduce labor, acquired 2 degrees in college. However, through all of it I have never lost my love for the horse and the way they make me feel when I am around them.
WHY NOW? The economy has caused the commercial Thoroughbred market to decline sharply. Hence there is a huge supply of horses and significantly lower demand. Breeders need to be able to do something with their horses and the market for a good racehorse will never die.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN ME AND THE OTHER TRAINER? My broad scope of experience of being a Horseman, Owner, Breeder, Trainer, General Manager, Amateur Jockey, Groom, Vet Assistant, Consignor, Thoroughbred Problem Horse Behavior Analyst and being well educated allows me to analyze the horse and the business differently than most people who have only had limited scope of experience no matter how long they have done it.
WHY SHOULD YOU GET MY HORSE? Because I will be proactive in taking care of your horse. These are a few of my favorite excuses I have heard from trainers after a loss “LUNG INFECTION” or “BAD IN THE GATE” or “NEEDS MORE GATEWORK” or “DID NOT SWITCH LEADS” or “SPOOKED AT THE PONY” or “LOOKING AT THE TOTE BOARD” or “NEEDS BLINKERS” or “NEVER DONE THAT BEFORE”. All the prior excuses are a direct indicator of the capability of the trainer. I will be proactive and protect your horse to make sure that every time I hang the bridle on your horse they will run their race, the only way he get’s beat in a race is racing luck and/or because the other horse or horses are better.
WHAT CAN I EXPECT FROM YOU? Hands On Care, Blunt Honesty, Good Training, Good Communication, Good Balanced Nutrition, Good Veterinary Care, Good Blacksmith Care, Positive Approach, Keeping your horse happy, Treating the horse like I own him but never forgetting that he’s yours.
